Syria: Faith Under Fire - Supporting Christian Protector Families

(Faces blurred for their protection)

Syria once stood as one of the most important centers of early Christianity.

From the road to Damascus — where Paul encountered Christ, to some of the world’s oldest churches, the Gospel has echoed through this land for nearly two millennia.

But today, Christianity in Syria is in crisis.

Since the outbreak of war in 2011, Syria’s Christian population has dropped by over 75%. What was once a thriving community of over 2 million has dwindled to fewer than 500,000 believers.

Many have fled due to civil war, persecution, economic collapse, and targeted violence against Christians. Entire neighborhoods have been emptied, churches bombed or shut down, and communities scattered.

And yet, some have stayed.

These remaining believers have made an extraordinary choice: to stand firm in their homeland, to protect their churches, and to hold fast to their faith. Many have taken up the role of protectors, local Christian soldiers and volunteers who risk their lives to guard churches and defend Christian neighborhoods from ongoing threats.

But while they serve and sacrifice, their families face unimaginable hardship.

A New Mission: Standing with Those Who Stay

In response to this urgent need, our team has launched a project to support the families of Syria’s Christian defenders — the unsung heroes holding the frontlines of faith in one of the world’s most dangerous places to be a Christian.

This initiative will support around 400 families, representing approximately 2,000 individuals with their basic needs, especially food.

These are widows, children, elderly parents — the loved ones of men who are choosing to protect their communities rather than flee. Without help, many of these families face hunger, homelessness, and hopelessness.

Why This Matters

This isn’t just about humanitarian aid, it’s about preserving a legacy of faith.
It’s about making sure that the Gospel continues to be lived out in one of the lands where it first took root.

When Christians in Syria stand firm, they do it at great cost.
Our job is to help carry that burden with them.
