A Nation Rebuilding Amidst Crisis
Iraq continues to recover from years of conflict, terrorism, and sectarian violence, which have left deep scars on its population. Over 1.5 million Iraqis remain displaced, and 2.7 million people are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. The ISIS insurgency, ongoing conflicts, and regional instability have devastated communities and disrupted vital services, with over 1.3 million children lacking access to basic education and healthcare. Nearly 4 million Iraqis face food insecurity, and the country grapples with a fragile economy in the wake of prolonged instability.
In Northern Iraq, particularly in the Nineveh and Dohuk regions, the effects of past ISIS occupation are still visible. Communities—especially Yazidis, Christians, and other minority groups—suffer from damaged infrastructure, destroyed homes, and a lack of livelihood opportunities. Many displaced families have not yet returned home due to insecurity and poor living conditions. Vulnerable populations continue to face trauma, unemployment, and limited access to essential services, deepening the humanitarian crisis in these already fragile areas.
2025 Initiatives
- School Reconstruction and Reestablishment (January 2025): We reconstructed an abandoned school due to war damage. The school serves around 150 students affected by the ongoing conflict between Turkish and Kurdish forces near Sharanesh, where many Christian families reside. These students were at risk of losing an entire academic year until TBP intervened—rebuilding the damaged school, hiring teachers, and providing all the necessary materials for them to continue their education.
- Another School Reestablishment (March 2025): Another education program in North Iraq supports 200–300 Christian students struggling to attend classes due to the ongoing conflict between Kurdish and Turkish forces near their villages. Our team rebuilt a local school, employed teachers from the community, and helped students make up for two years of lost education.
- Retrieving and Replanting Christian Lands in Iraq (April 2025 - Present): This project aimed to return confiscated lands to Christians in Northern Iraq, which had been seized by local authorities under the pretext of disuse, despite the ongoing bombings and clashes with Turkish forces that made farming impossible. Restoring these lands allowed 30 farmers to resume cultivation and created jobs for about 200 workers. Altogether, the 230 beneficiaries supported over 1,100 family members and brought new life to three Christian villages near the border. The TBP team cultivated and restored the farmland, provided water systems, and revived 5,000 almond trees that were at risk of dying. They also cared for and expanded 3,000 grapevines, supported pruning, pest control, and plant inoculation, and assisted with harvesting to help farmers sell their products and sustain future production.
- Supporting Assyrian Christians After an ISIS Attack (April 2025): In April 2025, ISIS attacked the Assyrian Christians of Iraq during their Assyrian Day celebrations in Duhok. The attack seriously injured five people, and an elderly woman remained hospitalized for a week. The TBP team visited the injured in the hospital and provided them with the necessary support. They then visited the village to assist its poor residents, restoring water to their homes and fields after the war had destroyed the entire water system.
- Supporting Christian Farmers in Iraq (May 2025): A cultivation project that supported 35 Christian farmers by preparing their lands and assisting with spring planting in Iraq. Around 200 people benefited from the project, and the cultivated lands provided a valuable opportunity for the farmers to continue planting over the next three to four years.
- Library and After School Support (July 2025- Present): In the once-devastated Christian town of Tal Kayf, our team launched a new effort to restore opportunity, learning, and hope for the future. Through the renovation of an unused building, our team helped create a library and after-school tutoring center to help motivate Christian families to remain in Iraq, equipping over 300 children and adults with laptops, books, and vital resources for learning and growth.
